Калуга впервые упоминается в летописях 14 века. В 18 – первой половине 19 вв. входила в число крупнейших городов России, именно тогда сложился классицистический ансамбль центральных улиц. С обмелением Оки торговое значение города упало. В советское время город стал относительно крупным промышленным центром, население к концу 80-х годов превысило 300 тысяч. Как и Калинин (нынешняя Тверь), Калуга была оккупирована осенью 1941 года, но освобождена уже в декабре того же года. Город делится на 3 района – Ленинский, Московский и Октябрьский.
